1.Extension of Period of Stay
In principle, a foreign resident in Japan with the status of residence
may stay in Japan only during the permitted period of residence.
Therefore, it will be a significant burden for a foreign national who could
not achieve his original purpose of staying in Japan within the period
of stay permitted upon the acquisition of a landing permit, to depart from
Japan to newly obtain a visa and to re-enter in Japan.
In this context, Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act authorizes Minister of Justice to extend foreign national's period of stay if he deems it is proper to do so.
If a foreign resident intends to extend his period of stay in Japan, he must apply to Minister of Justice for extending his period of stay in accordance with applicable procedures as set forth in the Immigration Control Act Enforcement Regulations.

2.When to submit
Up until the applicant's resident status expires (If the applicant is authorized
to stay in Japan for 6 month or longer, the immigration office will start
accepting his application form three months before his stay period expires)

The regional immigration office in charge of applicant's intended address
4.Screening criteria
The activities must fall under one of the activities described in the right-hand column of Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act Appended TableI, (except for the activities listed under the status of residence "Diplomat" and "Official") or the activities of a person with the civil status or position as described in the right-hand column of Appended Table II (the civil status or position in the right-handcolumn under "Permanent Resident" shall be excluded)
In addition, the applicant must face an adequate cause that requires extending his period of stay.
